In August 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, leading to unprecedented devastation. Hiroshima was bombed on August 6, followed by Nagasaki on August 9.
The blasts killed over 200,000 people, many instantly and others from radiation.
This tragedy hastened the end of World War II but left deep scars on humanity.
